When the Stars Fall

Synopsis:

Halyn Mugarson always believed that she was worthless.  Her father abandoned her and her mother when Halyn was only three, and in a graduating class of 49 in the tiny town of Cast Haven, Minnesota, Halyn somehow escapes notice.  But when an odd experience brings her close to her neighbor, Esteban, who finally starts to notice her, things are finally starting to look up.  That is, until her dad suddenly re-enters her life and treats her like a bag of dirt, crushing what little self - esteem  Halyn has left.  But when a star literally falls on Halyn and Esteban and takes them to the land of Keidreiy, she discovers that she could be wrong about her outlook on life and herself.  Through battles, love, war, good music, monsters, and separation, can Halyn learn to accept herself for the Ilori that she really is?

“What was that you said?” my dad inquired.

“Nothin’” I said as I once again filled my mouth with the taco hot dish, catching a particularly large and spicy pepper in the process.

“I heard about that,” my father said, pouring more hot sauce over his food as I took a deep drink of milk.

“Isn’t she in your grade, Esteban?” my mom asked nosily. I swallowed the milk and mumbled,

    “Yeah,” my mouth burning.

“Her poor mother,” my mom began. “First to lose her husband...let’s see...was it twelve years ago already? And now her daughter disappears...the poor woman.”

“Now, Mercedes...” My father’s voice revealed a hint of anger. “You make it sound like the man died. He up and left Karen with a three—year—old child to care for. He didn’t even bother to file a divorce. You know she’s still waiting for him to come back!”

Ah, the advantages of small town life. Everyone knows your personal life. Get used to it.

My father was always really touchy about the subject of Halyn’s dad, Mr. M. My dad is kind of old fashioned, and even though we moved here almost ten years after Mr. M abandoned his family, my dad despises him. I mean, there’s no way that my dad and her dad could have ever met; yet still my dad hates him. My mom thinks that Mr. M is as much a victim as Halyn or her mom. Usually, in small town soap operas, it’s the other way around, with the guy not caring and the woman being really upset about things like that. And no, I’m not weird; I have two older sisters, one of whom was obsessed with soap operas.

“She’s back,” I mumbled. I certainly didn’t want my parents to get into yet another argument about the Mugarsons. Because my mother would start defending Mr. M and my father would call him a dishonorable man, and then they would start fighting. And I would sit there wondering why in the world they got so wrapped up in something that didn’t even affect them.

“What did you say?” my mom wanted to know, busybody that she was.

“Speak up, son,” said my dad.

“She’s back,” I repeated. “Halyn’s back — that’s why I was over at her house today.”

I didn’t want to tell my parents about the void and the hair tie and all that weirdness, so I made up a half — truth: “I... eh... heard her playing piano and we started to talk.”

“Did you kiss her?” Marcos asked through a mouthful of food. What is it with little brothers and asking the most annoying, embarrassing things in the whole world? I wondered as my face started to get warm and I was undoubtedly blushing, which was weird and embarrassing and I tried to control it. You did the same thing to your sisters when you were his age, my brain reminded me. Shut up, brain. I told it.

“No!” I finally said, wrinkling my nose at him, and again pondered the behavior and workings of the mind of the strange species that is the little brother.

“You’re...” Marcos began again in that obnoxious tone that all older siblings learn to hate.

“Really?” My dad said, cutting him off while glaring icily at Marcos, who promptly shut up and resumed stuffing his face.

“Did she tell you what happened? Or where she disappeared to?” My mom is such a gossip. “Did she go to find her father? Did he come back?” Oh Mamá, you had to bring Mr. M back into it!

“No, he didn’t come back, and Halyn didn’t tell me where she went and I don’t think she ever will,” I snapped. My parents looked so shocked by my outburst that I felt I needed to add, “Look, it was weird, okay?” I swallowed the last of my hot dish and excused myself from the table, clearing off my dishes. “Where are you going?” my mom wanted to know, as usual. “Gonna go work on stuff for my band,” I replied shortly as I hurried up to my room.

“Hijo,” my father said, stopping me on the stairs. “Have you come up with a name yet?”

“Umm... actually, someone gave me an idea at school today, and I think I like the sound of it — Kafele.”

“Was it Helen’s idea?” Marcos asked, again butchering Halyn’s name in the way my family is famous for. I didn’t even answer him; I just glared.

“Is that some sort of new swear word or drug?” my mother asked suspiciously.

“¡Ay! ¡Claro que no, Mamá!” I said, so shocked I reverted into a bit of Spanish. “It’s just a word I heard someone make up today, that’s all.” I knew what it really meant — Halyn had told me on the way out of the void. It was one of the Gewete’s strange words he had called her in the void, along with other words like Ilori. Kafele meant “worth dying for” and besides, it sounded cool. It reminded me of something like Relient K, which was the type of music my band played anyway. I play lead guitar and do vocals, and my friends Dan and Max play drums and bass guitar respectively. We just can’t seem find a decent keys player, no matter how hard we look.I sat down at my computer and put my iTunes to shuffle, trying to scout out more songs for us to cover for our upcoming gig. And then...the perfect song came on. I listened to it a few times, then looked up the chords and began to play along on my acoustic guitar. After a few times through, I felt pretty confident, so I added it to my list of songs to learn with a special note next to it: H’s song.

Excerpt

“What were you doing over at the Mugarson’s today?” my mother asked me over dinner that night.

“Um...” I filled my mouth with food so I wouldn’t have to answer right away.

“Mamá, guess what?” my younger brother Marcos asked through a mouthful of spicy taco hot dish.

    “What, mi’ hijo?” she said.

“The neighbor girl across the street—Helen Moogerson—she went missing last night,” Marcos announced, spraying little bits of ground hamburger everywhere. “Just poof! Disappeared!” He talked with his hands, and his next bite of food flew off his fork and onto the floor.

“Halyn,” I corrected softly, knowing that it was my turn to sweep the floor and not wanting to get Marcos any more animated.

May 2013

In round two of editing.  I have corrections made on a proof copy that need to be entered into the computer.  I have to fix some formatting issues and am considering redesigning the cover.  (As you can see, my last name was cut off). This book will mostly likely be self published through Amazon's CreateSpace.

You Were the First

I usually end up writing an original song or two for every novel I write, whether I intend to or not.  This song ended up in the novel, so I thought I'd share it with you.

So much has happened this year for When the Stars Fall!  I'm getting really close to publishing!

  • First off, I found a beta reader, the lovely Carly Rose, also known as CarlynnRose on deviantart.  You should all check out her artwork-it's beautiful!

  • During NaNoWriMo 2013, I edited the book in its entirety, fixed a lot of passage of time issues and some serious character development problems that I'm still working on fixing.

  • One of my classmates is an art major, and I've commissioned her help in designing a new cover.  It's going to be beautiful.

  • Speaking of beautiful artwork, I am proud to announce that I have my first-ever fan art, created by none other than CarlynnRose, my wonderful beta reader. (she is honestly the best person ever!) You can see her second piece of art "I Feel Your Beating Heart" if you click the Stories tab above, but I will include it and her first fan art of Halyn in her coronation dress here. I can't even begin to describe how beautiful and amazing these are and how excited I am!

  • I hope to be published by spring break of this year!  I'll keep you posted!  And if you haven't already, you should like me on facebook: Michaila Curtis.  I just passed 50 likes today!

Behind the Scenes: The Story Behind the Story

When the Stars Fall started its life as a short story called "Let Go" written in one weekend during my freshman or sophomore year of high school.  It bascially featured a girl named Halyn trapped in a void with a thing called a Gewete - the very situation referred to in the beginning of the book.

I thought about making the story into a novel a few times because I really liked the characters I had created - Halyn and Esteban, and the setting I had created - Genesis Charter School, which was heavily based on my own school.  Then one night shortly after I turned 16, my youngest brother was being more obnoxious than usual, so to avoid conflict while we were trapped in the car together for the thirty minutes it took to drive to youth group, I grabbed my iPod, started blasting "Be My Escape" by Relient K, and used the genius feature to create a playlist.  And lo and behold, this song "Beautiful Love" came on.  I didn't even know I had the song, but as soon as I heard the line: The secret of our world/is written in the stars and found myself smiling every time the chorus came on (What a beautiful smile/can it stay for a while? You'd smile, too).  By the end of the car ride, I announced to my mother as I headed into youth group that I was going to write another novel.  (Yes, I have another novel I wrote in seventh grade.  We do not speak of that novel. Unless I'm making fun of it. )

I started it, got a few thousand words down before my friend introduced me to NaNoWriMo.  Then I started over and proceeded to write the entire book in November of 2011.  Now here I am, two years later, as grown up as Halyn was at the end of her story, and finally finishing it.

An early version of the cover.  I think it's pretty, but has a bit too much going on.

Also, I was trying to use my middle name as a last name...

New Cover!

June 2014

The final round of edits is done!  I'm waiting to hear back from Carly about any last finishing touches, but all the major plot issues are resolved (I hope!) I'm finalizing the redesigned cover, working on the design of the interior of the book and formatting, and doing all the finishing touches.

I hope to release it by the end of the summer.

I'm working in a library this summer and we're putting up a staff picks board for the school year.  Don't think I'm not going to shamelessly plug my own book.  This requires me to actually have the book done...

It's happening, guys! It's really happening!

November 2014

The finishing touches are complete.  The writing is DONE! Now it's a matter of getting permission to use lyrics that I use in the book and touching up the cover.

Soon! It will be very, very soon. I am very excited.

Another old version of the cover.  I like my new font choices much better.
