Beauty is Blind

This is my current work-in-progress.  It's a retelling of "Beauty and the Beast" in which the Belle character, Calista, is cursed with blindness.

Synopsis

I came into this world kicking and screaming and killing.  Not that I meant to, of course.

These words open Calista Rose Shepherd's story.  Born on the 21st day of Wintersong in the Year of the Lion on the longest night of the year, her birth comes at the cost of her mother and twin brother's lives. She herself is cursed with unnatural purple eyes that see nothing to pay the price for a secret bargain her mother made.  Sometimes she sees life smudges, blurs of color where there are living things, as if she is fighting this curse she knows nothing about.

Meanwhile in Sanglier, the province bordering Leander, a bastard prince is born to the king and a servant girl.  Having no other heirs, he names the son his successor, calling him Lysander.  Three years later, the queen becomes pregnant and Lysander and his mother are tossed aside and sent to an abandoned Leandan castle.  Lysander, who prefers the name his mother gave him, Damien, grows up with rejection heavy in his heart.  Because of this, he too, is placed under a curse that only love can break.

When fate brings them together, can Calista and Damien find the love in their hearts to break their curses?

Status

Under construction.  I've just started writing.  Rewriting, actually.  Ever since the great Hard Drive Crash of February 2013, I've been having to start over on a lot of things. I lost almost all of my work on this novel, including the year's worth of research and development I'd done.

Spring 2014

The story is now fully outlined and most of it is figured out.  There are two major scenes I still have questions about, but it's mostly planned and ready to write.  Now I just need to decide what tense I'm using...and point of view...
